A Rob Burrow Tribute

Matthew shares his thoughts on one of his heroes.

Now then.

I haven’t blogged for a while but have a duty today to share my thoughts on some of my heroes.

On Sunday gone, Rob Burrow passed away – he was a Rugby League legend and a hero as a bloke, husband, father and son. I was always aware of Rob due to all of the noise around his size, and the try he scored against St Helens in the Grand Final for me is up there with the greatest trys scored of all time in either code.

He came onto a lot more people’s radar due to his MND diagnosis in 2019 and then his subsequent fund raising and attitude towards the disease.

His partnership with Doddie Weir and the way in which they approached life with the disease, is nothing short of unbelievable.

The way he inspired his best friend and teammate Kevin Sinfield to do what he has to raise awareness of MND and the fundraising – circa £15m to date - is again nothing short of unbelievable.

If I am to my family, friends and colleagues a smidge of what Rob has been and still is to his, I will have done well.

If you can spare a moment, you must take time to watch the final documentary that aired on BBC1 on the 3/6. It was a tribute – yes - but it was more than that. It was an example of how we should all be to each other – if you do watch it make sure you have a hankie to hand.

I don’t want to spoil the programme as it is a poignant reminder of how vulnerable we all are but also how great we all are if we really want to be.

I’ll leave you with a quote from Rob – a genuine super hero.

“My final message to you is whatever your personal battle be brave and face it. In a world full of adversity we must still dare to dream."
