Has The World Run Out of Ideas?

Kathryn takes a look at why remakes are everywhere.

“There’s another one!”

That was Ian’s disbelieving holler across the office last week as another ‘sample-based’ new song blared out of the radio. No one could blame him for his outburst though, for it was about the tenth one we’d heard that morning, and that got me thinking…

Why are there so many remakes these days?

Whether it’s the music industry churning out sampled remixes, TV networks rebooting or continuing old cult classics, or Disney turning their entire back catalogue into live action films… remakes, for better or worse, seem to be the latest trend.

Now if you were to turn to social media for an answer, you’d probably find the same pessimistic rant:

  • “There are too many song samples nowadays as they can’t come up with anything original.”
  • “Stop making remakes just because you’ve ran out of ideas.”
  • “Are there seriously no new ideas? Just sequels & remakes. Ugh!!”

But is it truly a case of running out of ideas, or is there something else going on?

The most obvious answer is that remakes are simply a safe bet.

A ready-made audience (who have an attachment to the original) pretty much guarantees success for the product, and with the current financial squeeze affecting a lot of industries, it’s certainly a more appealing route than hoping a new idea works. This tactic of reimagining classics, however, is not fully without risk, for despite the nostalgia and emotional connection, there are quite a few remakes that have flopped.

But why? I mean the audience is there, so why aren’t they eating it up?

Is it due to a lack of marketing? Maybe, but I think it’s more to do with the audience not getting what they really want. Virtually every remake and sequel that’s superseded the original has been made with the fans in mind. Recreating the wonder and joy they experienced the first time, rather than focusing what works best for the company. So, as long as you get this right, you’re on to a winner.

And in the world of audio advertising, that’s exactly what we do at Get Carter Productions. We make sure that the consumer is at the heart of our adverts, which ultimately leads to your brand’s success.

  • What’s going to grab the consumer’s attention?
  • What’s going to connect them to your brand?
  • What’s going to drive them to buy your product?

These are all very important questions when it comes to our creative planning, and we definitely have not run out of ideas. So, get in touch and we’ll show you how our audio advertising, just like successful remakes, is a safe bet for your business.
