Into The Great Wide Open

Mark G embarks on a life-changing path.

If you’d told me when I began my unpaid stint of ‘work experience’ at Radio Tees in 1982, that I’d still be in the industry – forty one years later, I’d have asked you what you’d been drinking so early in the day!

(Yes, I was already an early adopter of replica NFL jerseys in the 80’s. I now have 2 entire wardrobes full of the damn stuff!)

And yet, here we are, over four decades have passed, and I’m signing off from the wonderful world of radio broadcasting and audio production, with one eye fixed firmly on the next horizon.

It’s been quite a ride over the years. From on-air presentation and raucous rock music shows, to the boiling pots of inspiration in the commercial production studios. There have been extravagant award ceremonies (22 to be precise) and lavish creative engagements across the pond, from New York to Dallas, and Los Angeles.

From the hallowed portals of the Metro Radio Group, to Emap, The Radio Partnership, Border TV & Radio, Capital Group, GMG, and finally here to the great Get Carter Productions, where I’ve been privileged to spend over a quarter of my working life. I guess you could say, I’ve packed a lot in to what’s been a pretty lively career. And I’ve always been lucky enough to work with the very best people in the creative industry, at each stop along the way.

But it’s time for a change, and I’m in a lovely position to be able to affect that change if I wish to. And I do wish to.

By the way, when I say change, I mean just that. The top two new careers currently in poll position on my list are; Civil Celebrant and Funeral Director. Yes, really.

So, here’s to fresh pastures. New adventures, and different experiences. And here’s to grasping them when you can.

Oh, by the way, I could always be tempted back behind a microphone for any of your ‘genuine Teesside voiceover’ requirements. You can enquire about availability and rates through my agent Rob, at North East Voices.

But for now, cheers everyone, and a heartfelt thank you one and all!

Mark G.
